Credit Card Wallets

October 18th, 2010

Times have changed.  Of course, we could talk for hours about these changes that have occured over centuries  but we will leave that to our history teachers.  However, even our somewhat recent past has vast differences from todays world.  In fact, these differences would make it nearly impossible for my grandfather who passed away in 1973 to function in this world.  Change occurs quicker than ever with the technology of today.  In my short 3 (and some) decades of life,  the world has evolved and been permanently transformed -for better or worse:  Ovens to microwaves; homecooking to drive-thrus; books to computers; landline phones to cellular phones…the list is endless.

The change I would like to talk about today is the contents of a wallets!  Forty years ago, someone’s wallet most likely held their drivers license, a checkbook, cash, coins and possibly a picture or two of their children.  The most obvious missing item of todays wallet is the credit card!  Prior to the current economy dip, we were people living above our means.   We simply swiped our credit card to charge whatever we couldn’t afford.  Some people filled their wallets with multiple cards.  While our current recession may have reduced our overuse of credit cards, our wallets are still full of them.   Unlike 40 years ago, we also have debit cards.  This has enabled us to leave behind the paper checks and pull out the handy, durable debit card.  Finally, our wallets are stuffed full of discount cards.  Almost every store offers its own discount card that is to be swiped with every purchase.  This computerizes the amount of sales made and offers discounts accordingly.

Thus, the biggest change in todays wallet is the number of card slots offered.  Three or four slots will not do the job.  We are talking ten to twenty slots needed.  This has bec0me a problem for many.  While several wallets offer around ten card slots, many others still hold 3-5 slots.  This does not accomodate the needs of consumers of the 21st century.

Wallet makers must step up and help!  I am happy to share with you some companies that have stepped up to the challenge providing rows of card slots for your organization and sanity!  Go to www.lodis.com to view their most recent credit card wallet.   It offers twentyish slots in a fashionable wallet in a huge selection of colors and patterns.  Also, as I have written of before, Vera Bradley has a zip around wallet full of card slots.  Of course, Vera Bradley offers these in her quilted various patters.  Go to www.verabradley.com to view your favorites.

Digital Wallets

October 7th, 2010

The digital wallets are on!  Bling Nation, a company that offers a payment service, designed specifically for local and community financial institutions, has reinvented the wallet through mobile phones.  Of course, this is available at their headquarters home in Palo Alto, California and the Stanford University Campus.  Hundreds of businesses in the community are using the tap-and-pay point-of-sale services.  Consumers and students can pay for almost any purchase with their mobile phone, or their “digital wallet” using the tap-and-pay technology.

It seems that Bling Nation and PayPal are working together so that anyone with a PayPal account can sign up for a BlingTag.  No, this is not a tag covered in rhinestones to improve your fashion sense.  A BlingTag is a quarter-sized microchip sticker that adheres to the back of a mobile phone.  This allows for transactions at the point-of-sale.

What is the consensus?  Are our genuine leather wallets on their way out to make room for the future of digital wallets?  I do not believe so.  We all know the convenience and importance of cash in our pockets.  Cash is a quick exchange.  We see what we’re spending.  We pay the small business owners cash to support their businesses.  We need cash to get into the school athletic event or to buy a drink while watching the event.  Of course, cash is useful for many other situations and help secure the life of the traditional wallet.

Although, I haven’t seen a BlingTag or really understand how it operates, I believe the digital wallet is worth the investment.  In many circumstances, being able to pull out the phone to pay could be nice.  Yet, this would require us to be off the phone during a sale in order to use it for payment!

How Important is a Wallet?

October 6th, 2010

I am not sure how much time most people put into purchasing a wallet.  In fact, I believe that in many cases people put very little effort into selecting the right wallet for them.  As Americans, we put great emphasis on outward appearances.  The clothes we buy, the shoes we wear, homes we build and the lawns they sit on are important expenditures.  Of course, these are items we show off to the world every day.  Wallets?  They are not so visible and thus, just don’t get enough attention.

We all know that women often carry purses in which they store their wallets.  This most likely causes the woman to think little about whether her wallet is attractive, current or fashionable, unlike her handbag she carries.  As for the male gender, most simply don’t care what their wallet looks like and will purchase any black fold that will carry their bills.  This is why many people do not put much effort into purchasing the right wallet.  I believe this is a mistake.

First, if we are attempting to present ourselves as confident and capable, we must be able to manage our money and show others the ease in which we do so.  Therefore, the functionality of a wallet is an absolute necessity.   When working with your banker, a new client or simply purchasing items from your favorite store you frequent, you need to handle your money smoothly and responsibly.  It will be difficult for you to do this if your wallet is stuffed full of receipts, ripping at the seams with change falling out of the coin purse.  Your wallet should be organized to your liking, having all the slots, pockets and bills for your needs.  You should be able to open your wallet and go right to the section you need to handle your business affairs without fail.

In addition, I believe that not only the function of a wallet is important but also the appearance of a wallet.  Is it in good shape?  Is it worn?  Is it of  high fashion?  Is it modern?  Is it handmade?  Is it green?  Now, don’t misunderstand me.  I am not saying that your wallet needs to be all of these things.  But whatever you would like to communicate to others about yourself, will be done so through your wallet.  Take advantage of this fact!  You can show you are a hip, sleek salesperson up for the new position.  Or you can show that you can work with your hands and will be the perfect designer for the company.

Magic Wallets are not really magic!

May 23rd, 2010

I guess thats not really a news flash.  But to my 8 year old anything with the word magic attched to it has, well… a magical quality to it.  Tinkerbell used her “magical” fairy dust to help Peter Pan fly.  So it only makes sense that when our friend showed my daughter her “magic” wallet that she assumed it must have been touched with some type of tinkerbellian fairy dust!  Well, after studying it for a few minutes she declared, “Magic wallets are not really magic”.  How she came to that conclusion is beyond me, but she had a certain certainity about her voice that made you think that she had noticed something.  I guess if one looks closely at the way a magic wallet is made they can begin to see the simple, yet ingenious design.  Those two words might seem like an oxymoron, but I do not believe they are.  Two sides of a wallet joined by interlacing stretchy rubber in a “X” fashion.  Could anything seem simpler?  Yet when they flip back and forth, they lift from one side to the other, allowing money, etc to be trapped in the wallet.  I guess it does have a certain “magical” quality about it.  I have seen friends play with them for long periods of time.  They open and close them, putting in money or cards, or other things.  They study it as if they are figuring out the magic, they are out to disprove the magic.  Much like my 8 year old, who I guess did figure it out.  I do not think that Tinkerbell made her rounds to the wallet manufacturers, so I think its safe to say they are just fun.  Kind of like a rubiks cube or that game with the golf tees and the triangle peg board.  Haven’t seen those in awhile…you would think restaurants would be smarter and get more of those.  Check out the magical wallets that aren’t really magic at www.myuniquewallets.com.  You might not see Tinkerbell, but they are fun to play with!

Why are some wallets so EXPENSIVE?

May 21st, 2010

One thing that you’ll notice right away when you start shopping for a unique wallet is the varying prices of wallets that are out there.  You can find a wallet for as little as $5 or spend hundreds.  And its not like cars, where they all basically have a price range of $12000 to $60000.  And then anything above $60000 is those rare millionare type cars you never see on the road.  Lots of people will actually spend hundreds of dollars on a wallet that they will use regularly.  Many urban and suburban women alike have coach wallets and Louis Vuitton wallets.  Either they are spending their hard earned money on wallets that will last or they are buying imitation wallets that do not hold up.  It is amazing to me how many imitation wallets there are for the expensive brand name wallets.  Coach and Louis Vuitton seem to be the two biggest ones that people try to imitate.  Coach is the worst.  Theres a store at our local flea market that sells “coach” items.  Hundreds of wallets and purses that look just like Coach items, all at flea market prices!  I’m not sure what Louis Vuitton does differently than Coach to keep their stuff from getting imitated and sold, but fake Coach wallets seem to be everywhere!  So why are some wallets so expensive?  Many times it is the brand name, that is kind of obvious.  Hence why there is so much imitation.  Could you imagine an imitation Rolls Royce?  It just doesn’t happen because there are special things that actually make that car better.  With wallets its much harder to see or even know those differences.  The quality of the leather, the stitching used to keep the wallet together (both the type of thread and the method) and the type of material used for the wallet.  These are most of the biggest things!  Not much…Check out www.myuniquewallets.com to find less expensive wallets that still have high quality.

Passport and Travel Wallets

May 21st, 2010

What makes a great passport or travel wallet?  This is the kind of thing that only an avid international traveler could answer well.  Unfortunately I am not one of those people, so I did some asking and some research into what people think are important.  One of the first things that came up was the obvious… security and passport slot.  Seems that when you tavel it is important to be able to get to your important things quickly.  Of course your passport is like your drivers license is to us in America.  So you need that passport everywhere you go.  And everyone wants a travel wallet that fits that comfortably.  Of course as with most wallets, everyone is concerned about security.  That is the point of a wallet, right?  Keeps your important things like cash, credit cards, and passports close to you and secured in something.  I guess when traveling internationally this is more important than in the US.  Seems most folks I talked to have a lingering concern when they travel abroad that they are not quite as safe as they are at home.  I don’t know if that’s actually true, like statistically speaking.  But either way this is why you have some popular passport or travel wallets that come with a strap to wear around your neck.  Having your personal things around your neck is an extra precaution to be sure your stuff is kept safe.  Check out the great selection of passport wallets and travel wallets at the unique wallet site.

Stingray leather

April 27th, 2010

In Japan it is referred to as “Honzame”.  In Europe it is refered to as “Shagreen”. The stingray skin has been utilized worldwide for centuries because of its beauty and durability. It is the most durable leather used on the planet.  The inherent qualities of the Stingray skin make it so durable in fact, that it is resistant to water, fire, puncture, tearing, and abrasion.  It is often referred to as “immortal” and jewel of the sea because of its durablity. Stingray leather will not burn, break or fray, yet it can be cut with a standard pair of scissors. It is perhaps most famous for its utilization on Japanese sword handles.  Stingray leather has been used throughout history, most notably in Japan, for everything from armor and sword handle wraps to high quality wallets, handbags, and even sandpaper.   It was also very popular and widely used on American and European swords and daggers. In Egypt when the tombs of ancient pharaohs were discovered, stingray leather was found to be used as armor, decoration and ornamental embellishment. More recently, stingray can often be seen in pieces  of furniture, crafts, eyeglass cases, parasol umbrellas, handbags and many other products. Stingray leather is in the midst of a worldwide fashion revival.  In the 1920′s Art Deco period, polished stingray leather, also known as shagreen, was at its fashionable peak covering everything from furniture to jewelry boxes. Now, due to its exotic beauty and its reputation as the worlds’ most durable leather, stingray is growing in popularity.  One things that many ask about is the killing of stingrays.  But leather itself comes from the hides of animals.  And stingrays are neither endangered nor threatened and are found in abundance in the shallow, warm waters of the world. Specifically, throughout the Pacific Rim, Stingrays are fished commercially as a primary food source just like cattle or pigs. It’s unique beauty is highlighted by the shiny pebbly texture of the skin, along with a one-of-a-kind design feature – the bony remnant of the dorsal fin that resembles a tiny cluster of “pearls”.   Today, stingray is still used for many of the above as well as knife sheaths, knife handles, wallets, belts, handbags, boots, and other accessories.  There is a wallet that Hammacher Schummer sells that is made of Stingray.  Here is what they say about it:

“This is the wallet handmade with an exterior of 100% genuine stingray skin, the same durable material used for centuries by Japanese swordsmiths as a wrap for weapon hilts to ensure a confident, lasting grip. Considered by many to be the toughest wallet material in the world, the resilient stingray skin withstands the daily stresses placed on a wallet, ensuring years of reliable use without the fading, cracking, or unraveling common to typical wallets. The stingray skin is naturally moisture-resistant without the need for special cleaning techniques or preservative treatments. The exterior of the wallet is decorated with a “crown” named for the center of the dorsal skin near to where the ray’s barb extruded, but has been sanded smooth during the tanning process. “

Coupon Wallets

April 27th, 2010

I have been doing some research into Coupon Wallets and the companies that make and sell them.  We hope to carry a great selection of them at www.myuniquewallets.com.  But there’s not much out there, but its really highly searched.  The coupon wallet seems to be a wallet small enough to fit on your purse and then velcros onto the shopping cart.  This is a great advantage.

www.TheCouponWallet.com – has her own site, its number one searched on google.  The site seems to have been started by a mom who wanted a better way to organize her coupons.  She made a new organizer and eventually began selling them.  Theis turned out really well it seems, because now she has a great looking site with lots of traffic and is selling her coupon wallets.  Takes a pretty good mom to raise a family and make a business idea work!

CR Gibson – number one on google shopping.  Nice coupon wallets, hopefully we can make a good connection with them.

Jaclyn Smith – number two on google shopping.  Very large company, making lots of things.  Brand name basically.  They will probably be too big for us to work with initially, but we’ll see.

4 best bargains – number 3 on google shopping, number 1 on amazon and had most by far – I think they make the “purse size deluxe coupon organizer wallet”  They hid the maker well if its not them.  There seem to be a lot of these on amazon.  As a company they dont look like a manufacturer, but they say they are.  They have a “made in the USA” logo.  They have 72 patterns and styles for the Purse Size Coupon wallet organizer.  Interesting too that they use five key words to describe every wallet.

Buxton – number one on amazon in clothing section.  Buxton is a highly searched wallet maker.  We would really like to make a connection with them and their wallets.  Hopefully we will not only be selling their coupon wallets, but other mens and womens wallets as well.

Silver hooks inc – number two amazon-in clothing, carry several kinds of wallets (key words – flat, clutch, snake, checkbook, pink, purple, alligator, cell phone, opera, white, flower, red, eco-friendly, black, tire, animal, giraffe).  They seem to have a lot of animal print and creative print wallets.

Hannah Hansen and Jokari are two other companies making good selling coupon wallets.  But these guys were smaller, or were selling less than the other comapnies listed here.

Hopefully we can sell all these on www.myuniquewallets.com soon.

Braithwaite Wallets

April 21st, 2010

A unique wallet that men can get is a Braithwaite wallet.  Found at www.Brathwaitewallets.com there is only five special designs to pick from.  Judging from the pictures, these unique wallets seem to be used by mostly men in Europe.  Or at least that is their target area.  There are only five different designs for a Braithwaite wallet.  The “rapture”, the “orpheus”, “the sunrise”, “Cypress” and “The Vagabond”.  Each design is unique, having small features that differentiate it from the others.  The “Rapture” is very small and thin, the “Orpheus” has slots for coins, “The Vagabond” is a zipper wallet.  To see the small differences with each wallet, go to www.braithwaitewallets.com and see for yourself.  The wallets are not cheap though.  They are pretty expensive as far as wallets go.  They range from $97 to $137 for one.  And currently, the $97 wallet, the “Cypress” is out of stock.  One additional item that these wallets offer that is uncommon is their “Lost wallet promise”.  They have a written policy for their wallets that states if you ever lose your braithwaite wallet, or have it stolen, they will replace it for free.  All you need to do is write or email the company that you’ve lost it and they will replace it for you.  They feel like they have a certain type of client who uses their wallet and that they wouldn’t be dishonest about it (this is what their policy states).  So they have this promise attached to all their wallets.  Seems pretty cool, and probably fairly safe for the company considering the cost of the wallet.  Meaning that your average guy won’t be spending over $100 on a wallet, so they can offer this.  As a company Braithwaite has lofty goals.  First, they want to create the most innovative wallets possible, they feel that most wallets are “boring”.  They also want to treat their customers with excellence.  They believe that having a good relationship with the person they sell to that things in the world will be better.  I find this admirable, but wonder how that really plays out for them.  I think the idea is good and expect that same kind of high level of customer service to come from www.myuniquewallets.com. I am unsure about the “promise” policy, but it has merit.  I will look into that more as well.

Coupon Wallet Organizer

April 19th, 2010

What a great way to organize your coupons!  Not only can you organize your coupons but these organizers hang from your shopping cart so that you can use your unique wallet while shopping.  At www.myuniquewallets.com there are alot of great designs that can be picked from also.  Another great place to find coupon wallet organizers is at www.thecouponwallet.com.  There is a great selection at the couponwallet.com.  The founder started on her own making a coupon organizer for herself.  This eventually was so well liked that she began selling the coupon wallets.  What a great idea to organize your coupons in a wallet size organizer that can hang on the grocery cart.  There are many great designs that are offered at www.myuniquewallets.com.  The most popular design is the black and white Purse Size Coupon Organizer Wallet.  It is mostly an off white color with a black sketched picture of a woman with her child.  There are many other popular designs for the Purse Size Coupon Organizer Wallet.  The next most popular designs are rainbow, striped pastel and brown with pink polka dots.  The great thing is that there many different kinds of styles so that you can find the wallet that best fits your personality.  Some other designs are brown with blue polka dots, paisley, butterfly and plaid.  If you are the type of person who likes to organize things, this is a great thing for you.  Do you have a friend or family member who is really into organizing things, likes to cut coupons?  What a great gift this is for that person.  Best of all you can pick from many different styles at www.myuniquewallets.com.  Even though the coupon wallet is not really a wallet in a true form, it still can be found on the uniquewallets.com site.  There is an “almost wallets” section that has items that are not fully wallets, but have the same idea.  Be sure to check the selection out.
